Same thing.

It seems that every apartment I look at under $1,000 a month is rent or as you put it, income restricted.

My xDIL rents a 3 bd in SOG for $1000 a month. The area she lives in isn't a bad area but the homes are older.

I am confused.. income restrictions to me are Section 8, an apt for $1000.00 a month wouldn't be Sec. 8.

Default not neceaasrily sect.8

what they are is nice apartment complexes built so that the developer gets tax credits for keeping the rents "low" and restricting the tenants to certain incomes and size apts. For example my husband and I could only get 2 br. since we are a couple even tho we might want a 3. We couldn't make more than, I think last time I checked, $34K give or take but you also have to have a minimum income. That's a big income if 2 people are working for under 9/hr. There is a scale based on family size. *There are no vouchers involved.* The tenant applies, pays it all and needs a regular income. Credit and background are checked but just as everywhere, you get problem tenants and they can be evicted because these places are owned by corporations not the govt. on a non-profit basis. Their "profit" is the tax credits. I've heard some bad things about them elsewhere but I don't know if that's true. The ones we've looked at are very nice as far as the apartments go.
I think 2 people can find well under 1K/month in such a place here. Look, wherever you go you're going to pay one third of your income at least for rent, unless someone cuts you a super deal or you trade some work for rent with a private landlord and stuff like that usually doesn't happen anymore.

Thanks for the post tampaguy! I lived in St. Pete for a summer about 8 years ago and I didn't want to leave. My wife and I are planning to relocate in the next few years and were kicking around all the south florida metro areas. Tampa sounds the most like Denver, a relatively laid back mid-sized city with a lot going for it, only water everywhere and no snow.

You would be surprised at the negative reactions you get from people if you mention you want to move to Florida. It's like everyone had one bad experience at Disney World or saw a hurricane on the news, so they judge the whole state. It's refreshing to see that I am not crazy to want to live there and there are plenty of people like me. See you guys in a few years!

Hey thanks for the positive thread! I am researching areas in Florida to move and St. Petersburg is near the top of my list! I think it's a great place (I lived in Temple Terrace for a short time and have visited Tampa many many times) and I think I will prefer it to Orlando. My only concern is the job market! Otherwise I just may be sold.......

Whenever I tell people I want to move to Florida I always get "No way...too many hurricanes!" Yet they don't realize that the winter storms we get in Maine do as much damage as the hurricanes.

Here is one of the many stories like it that are on the news here in Maine...

Gym Roof Damaged By Heavy Snow

HIRAM(NEWS CENTER) -- The Sacopee Valley High School gymnasium roof is buckling under heavy snow.

Talking not crazy

if you can't have fun at 20 something's wrong
Just don't give yourself a deadline to figure it out. More important, don't worry about anyone else's deadlines for YOUR life. FYI I'm 61 and still haven't figured it out. That's the blessing and the curse of being a creative type There's always some new adventure and idea to explore. IF you think you'd like palm trees and beaches for a while, go for it. The masage therapy should keep you alive because there are resorts and tons of spas here, also chiropractic may be bigger than up north, and they hire massage therapists.
Enjoy!
