I'm not talking about class, education or financial means. I'm referring to an antipathy for people unlike themselves.

A person with an antipathy for people unlike themselves is called a bigot.
There are some of them in St.Pete and they come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

Default Much more important things to worry about

Perhaps you are the one whom is racist, asking if there are "rednecks" is no different then using a slang to refer to a uneducated person of color.

When you say Rednecks, I assume you're talking about the typical rebel flag waving trailer trash types? If that's so, they are more common in the areas between St. Pete and Clearwater, such as Largo, Seminole and Pinellas Park. They are also pretty prevalent in Pasco, Hillsborough (outside city limits) and Polk counties.

hmmmmm...rednecks...

I have friends that qualify as rednecks...from all over the state as well as other states. There seems to be a need to refer to them as a sub-culture or something low class. My experiences have left me with the belief that those redneck friends of mine are some of the most real friends I'll ever have. They take their friendships very seriously and I know I could count on any of them for anything at anytime.

I also know some wealthy, educated people who use their friends, lie to their loved ones, cheat on their spouses and truly have no class at all. There are probably some of those types of people in every town, too.

Great post! I feel the same way. I am getting sick and tired of people asking if some area here is "full of rednecks." It is bigoted and demeaning. My husband and I have all types of friends, including some that some here would label "redneck" and I tell you what, I would take an honest, hard-working "redneck" over some snobbish, high-society wannabe any day.

We also have friends of every race, color, age, religion, etc. We live and let live. I wish more people would do the same.

Trust me on this. There are three times the amount of rednecks here in Tampa. They are much more popular here. St. Pete has more educated and cultured type people, but there are some rednecks there too. Afterall, we are in the south. I still have not gotten used to them, even after a year!

No it is not racist to call a redneck a redneck. A redneck is a type of distinct person you know one when you see one period. It is what it is. Such is life.

Can I trust you to be a little more vague? Your statements are based on biased rhetoric and no facts at all, except that we are in the south. Such searing intellect...
