US News and World Report has listed the best hospitals in the country and all of the internet is abuzz. It's a fascinating report that even lists specialties and children's hospitals. Here is the list for Tennessee.

You're welcome! That link leads to all kinds of wonderful lists regarding hospitals but also doctors, specialties, health plans, nursing homes....It's pretty neat.

It's odd not to see Cookeville Regional not being ranked at all there. I was under the impression that it was one of the best "Heart" hospitals in the nation

According to a report by HealthGrades, awhile back, it is but HealthGrades has received a lot of criticism regarding their reports. Not to knock Cookeville Regional, mind you, but HealthGrades.

The only hospitals that were included in this US News report were hospitals with at least 200 beds that were also teaching hospitals AND affiliated with a medical school. That knocks out probably 90% of Tennessee's hospitals, including Cookeville Regional which has a lot more than 200 beds but is not affiliated with a medical school. I'm hard pressed to think of any other hospitals in Tennessee that WOULD make this list other than those that are already listed.

So, this ranking by US News is pretty useless since only a small handful of Tennessee's (and the nation's) hospitals were included.

UT Medical Center ranks nationally » Knoxville News Sentinel

To be eligible for ranking in any of the 12 data-dependent specialties, a hospital first has to satisfy at least one of four criteria: It has to be a teaching hospital, or be affiliated with a medical school, or have at least 200 beds, or have at least 100 beds and offer at least four of eight specific medical technologies, such as a PET/CT scanner and certain precise radiation therapies. This year a total of 2,227 hospitals, or 46 percent of the initial universe, made it through this first door.

I know for a fact that hospitals with less than 200 beds are included in the criteria. Northeast TN had a great showing! IPMC in Kingsport was listed and they are less than 200 beds.

Congratulations to all of the hospitals that are listed in one of the most prestigious reports out.

Cookeville Regional was rated one of the top 4 cardiology specialty hospitals in the NATION. Notice that Vanderbilt did not have the Cardiology category.
