Hi guys!

Are there any smaller, "funky" towns in Tennessee? I know cities like Nashville and Chattanooga have thier spots, but I'm looking for a smaller place, and am not as familiar with the state. Maybe something along the lines of Asheville, NC, Chapel Hill, NC, Athens, GA to give you an idea of what I mean.

Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!!

Tennessee doesn't have too many towns the size of Asheville. Most of them are suburbs of Nashville and very bland (Franklin, Murfreesboro, et al.).

Johnson City is around 65,000 and definitely has a funky arts scene, though it has not progressed as far as your examples. It's maybe 30-40 years behind Asheville and Chapel Hill in many ways; only 10-20 years behind in others.

If you're really looking for the Asheville vibe, try downtown Knoxville and Chattanooga. They really do feel like "large towns," not small cities.

Downton Frankiin is very cute and quaint, maybe even a bit artsy - but definitely not funky at all. Very upper middle class/upper class vibe.

Tin Man, do they just have interesting names, or are they the kind of places I'm seeking out? Thanks for the list!

I think they just have interesting names. Bucksnort is near 1-40 and has a big industry selling souveniers. Soddy-Daisy is typical suburbia. The only other one i've been to is Turtletown. It has a cafe, maybe a honey store, that's it.
