I am currently living in upstate NY, Finger Lakes area. Lots of lakes, rivers, hills, trees, cows and wine country, and tons of snow and sub-frigid temps. I am coming down this next week for an interview with a company in Chattanooga. The pay is quite a bit lower than I make now, but the level of stress and hours will be much healthier for me as I am about to explode working where I am.
Anyway, my wife and I are both in our early 50's and should also have $100-120k house cash. I have two teenage daughters that will probably split the year with me and their mother back in NY. I would have them either go to school here or come spend vacations with me and finish school up north. That will be their choice when the time comes. We plan on renting for awhile if we decide to move down that way and we are looking for recommendations. I know it also depends on whether or not the girls are with me, I will assume they would be with me during school so decent schools are important.
I have read extensively through the other posts about Chat and I am looking probably to be near Cleveland or out that way, Soddy Daisy also sounds quite nice too. We live in a small town now, pop of 14k, and would like to find somewhere similar, or even smaller, with a couple acres and some trees and privacy. But we also need to be within a half hour drive ± to downtown. I am really open to almost any area, I just don't want to live in the city as we really want land around us.
Any opinions about areas, cost of living etc are appreciated.

I'm not familiar with the Chat area, but I'm sure someone on here is. Good luck to you!

Howdy Neighbor! I live right outside of Albany, in Troy, for the time being. We will be moving to TN in a few months. The week of the 19th we will be in TN doing our househunting and enjoying the sites!

We have been doing research on different areas in TN for about a year now. I have a friend who's mother is a real estate agent down in the Tri-Cities area and she has been a great help to us.

I agree with you about wanting a slower pace of life. I definitely don't want to be in a big city. After growing up in the Albany area I want a change of pace. I am also a nature lover and the area of TN that we are looking at is perfect.

We have been looking at schools, doctors, specialists and such because we have custody of our 5 year old grandson who has disabilities. We have found wonderful resources in TN. I think its a win win situation for us.

Good luck!

Laurie

Default Ex- Capital District...... Hamilton - Bradley co.

Hello Upstate Tri-cities, Albany,Troy, Schnestady, Rt # 4 North Greenbush here, in Hamilton co. DINK: Bradley county is East of Chat and where Cleveland, (Its own city) is located. East of there is Ocoee, water gorge rural.
Ooltewah, more popular this week after MVP Quarterback from Super Bowl ,P Manning. TRAFFIC along I-75 should be a daily concern as ANOTHER 8 car pile-up this week. We are waiting daily for the announcement if the new TOYOTA plant will be chosen for this area. Many people ask about Jobs, and construction, comm, is very busy. Neighbor mentioned her co increased a hiring bonus up to $600 bounty for new hires, even to Work At HOME. ! So reliable people are always in demand.
West side of lake, rt #27 area, Hixon, Soddy seems to be less populated at this time, but big homes being built. School districts are always being re-zoned so new parents should get the LATEST answer from a real estate agent. Renting 1st is always a smart idea. $120 K is a very do-able budget in the S.E. part of state. Just not on the Deep water section of the river. Maybe $600K to $2 mil.......20 degree temps in morning .Only 2" of snow this season. ...........................................[IMG][/IMG]
