Thank you, hiknapster, AppalachianAngler and Laura! My husband is ready to move - today! You made our day!!!! I'll keep an eye on my cows.
hiknapster, we visited Bristol (too big, beautiful weather, very friendly, kind people); Gatlinburg (beautiful weather, crowded); Smokey Mtns - so gorgeous.
We stayed in the Franklin, NC area a few times thinking that that was the place for us but when looking for property, just didn't want to do the mountain roads up to the newer areas. I really can't retire to a place where I have to back down the single lane gravel road if someone is coming the other way. Not my style. Coming from flat Ohio, you know. Call me chicken, its ok.
I did find that I don't like the higher elevations - above 3,000 ft - had a lung problem when I was younger, the air just doesn't agree.
I guess we are narrowing down my choices - below 3,000 ft., in or very near the mountains, near medical care, smaller town than Bristol.
Thank you for all of your comments!

I just figured it out! You need to move to Townsend, Tennessee.

Right at the entrance to the Smoky Mountains National Park, but away from most of the tourists. However, right next door to Maryville, and not very far from Knoxville.

Don't feel bad about being afraid of driving in the higher elevations. You will get use to it. My husband had only drove on flat land, too. I wouldn't let him drive. He terrified me! Now he's fine.

Beautiful mtn. area nice helpful locals, possible looking for a farming area that would employ a husband and wife team with houseing available. Would love to care for horses again and have my children grow in a wholsom environment.

You guys look like you know East TN well, so I have a question. My parents are from Rogersville, have lived in Florida for 35 years and want to go back. They are specifically looking for a gated community located somewhere between Rogersville and Kingsport. Any ideas, names, info would be very much appreciated.

A gated community? I haven't seen any. Even Strawberry Fields/800k+ homes isn't gated.

sunny.

I agree with Sunny, however there are a few developments/subdivision type areas just inside the Kingsport/Hawkins county line off of 11W that have the look and feel of a "typical" gated community, HOA's and all that might fit the bill?

well I think anywhere there is humidity you may suffer sinus problems, I certainly do!! FairFields Glades in Crossville TN is the retirement capital!! It has everything under the sun to do right there! BUT... there are no mountains, as it is in the plateau... they have a playhouse, some resturants and a good medical facility in town. Fairfield Glades got so big it has it's own zipcode now, within it has shopping centers, malls, recreation of every kind, many golf courses, beautiful lakes and the housing is VERY inexpensive!! I was there last summer and really was thinking about buying a lot...BUT... I prefer mountainess land. It is true though, mountains become boring and old news if there is nothing in town and you have to travel far out... If you need an excellent realtor to help you look in the glades, let me know.. It's like being in your own world in FairField Glades...thing is you have to be retired, because it is too far to travel to Knoxville for work everyday. The south is humid though, keep that in mind...
