One neat detour to take off I-10 is between Mile Marker 325 & 343 near Sheffield. It will take you on an old segment of US 290 east out of Sheffield, crossing the Pecos River and past Ft Lancaster State Park before ascending Sheffield Hill which is a pretty steep grade (4% grade I think) and the view across the valley is just breathtaking from the rest area at the top of the hill. Well worth the extra 30 min or so to see some awesome vistas of West Texas. In fact, much of the old 290 is still drivable in places and is sometime used as service roads for I-10.

Another neat diversion is Caverns of Sonora about 8 miles west of the City of Sonora. The formations are breathtaking and tours take about an hour. Unfortunatley, some inconsiderate person about a year ago vandalized the cave's signature formation by snapping off a portion of it. Still very much worth checking out. Have been there many times as my mom was a native of Sonora.

I have intended to check the caverns out for some time. If I ever get down to San Angelo sometime, I'll see about checking them out.
