I have always thought of Oklahoma as more of a rival state with Texas than New Mexico, but maybe that's because I'm thinking about college football rivalries and because I live in North Texas.

Not rivals but complimentary states, by that I mean the states are so different culturally and serious mountains in NM. It's nice to be able to enjoy both states, cool mountains summers in angel fire feel incredible after living in Texas summers. I love the New Mexico culture near Taos, but I do not want to be around it full time....it makes a great change of pace from DFW.

Texas has nothing to offer me unless I were to make a trip to Austin again so I would never think twice about Texas except that Texans flood into Ruidoso every weekend.

They enjoy our cool weather, skiing, trees, scenery, casinos, horse racing etc and many try and fail to make it here financially. But really the bottom line is they spend money and we take. One of the biggest money makers for us is Texans trying to live here by starting businesses and buying real estate, not mention the tourism.

Texans can be gawdy, uncouth, clueless about the rest of the world, good natured, kind, generous etc etc.
They are mostly tourists: Don't know where theyre going, what they are doing half the time and stop dead in the street simply because we deer roaming around. But they are here to have fun and see something besides the non existant scenery in TX.

I think most people in NM like Texans or just don't care one way or another.
I rather live in Afghanistan than new mexico. New mexico sucks.

And football is religion down here so I think Texas and Oklahoma pose more of a rivalry than the Lone Star State and Land of Enchantment!

My family used to vacation in the Ruidosa area quite a bit, and I never really detected any animosity. I know a lot of the residents refer to us as "flatlanders", but I never got the impression it was (or for the most part at any rate) an insulting/derogatory term.

I've been to New Mexico several times and never had a problem. It's quite scenic especially near the Colorado border. One thing I thought was really cool was those dust devil's on I 10 between Las Cruces and the Arizona. Those things just pop out of nowhere.

I certainly would not rather live in Afghanistan, but I have about zero interest in living in New Mexico over Texas. Beautiful scenery has never been a deciding factor for me. Plus I hate dry weather.

Not sure why Texans refuse to get the name right. Odd name I guess.

Ya'll come back ya here?....
Now waitaminit!! Not ALL of us native Texans get the name wrong--LOL!! If you think that's bad, you should hear some of the ways some of us butcher Spanish names HERE--makes me cringe.

It's actually a Spanish name meaning "noisy" or "rowdy."

And it's "y'all".......but thanks just the same. :-)

We spent quite a bit of time in Ruidoso over the years, and when I lived in Alamogordo (4 years) I'd visit occasionally. Great food and bad traffic, LOL!
