Can anyone recommend an honest and fairly priced foundation repair company in Abilene? Also, a structural engineer to evaluate foundation issues? I have been told there is only one person in town who does structural engineer reports for foundations in the entire town, is this true?
a friend has been told they need 28 piers on their house, to the tune of $11,000 or so....a second opinion said 30 piers (steel) for 20K...widely diverging opinions to say the least...the house was built in 1954, slab foundation....seems like overkill (28 piers)....so really need some input on this...the 11K was for concrete piers....thanks!

update: (For anyone reading this in Abilene area)....have now been told by one foundation repair co. that wait time is 3-4 weeks before work can start on foundation repair, due to backlog caused by extreme drought in TX....if anyone knows of a good foundation company in town or the surrounding areas serving abilene, including FT Worth that isn't "backlogged", please post...thanks.

Forgive me for replying in your post. I do not have an answer for you. I'm quite sorry.

I feel that what I'm about to say does VERY much have at least a tiny amount of add-age to your post.

I AM going to move to Texas in a short time ( 6 months to a year ) and I think I know how to make a living. But looking at your numbers that you have posted, I'm very, very seriously wondering...if I should go to school for architecture and become a foundation guy. From everything I hear, they seem to make a mountain of money.

When you "dumb-it-down" how hard can it realllllllly be? Dirt > affecting the structure of concrete > lumber > a house. Sorry. I'm just thinking out loud. But seriously... I bet "those guys" are overcharging.

Default Careful - the soil content will surprise you

To Bob the Fart Guy,

Inserting piers of any kind is not the problem. The question is, how far down do they need to go? "To the point of resistance" is the most common answer. Once the clay soil is rehydrated (expands), what happens to the piers? Or do you pay for the piers to hit bedrock? Will the top portion of the piers be able to support the weight of the home when the soil expands or drys out? Not as simple an answer as it may seem.

Check out the various websites of the foundation repair companies. All will tell you their competitors product will fail.

You can hire a licensed Structural engineer to help you out here, but the one I hired has cashed my check and not sent me any information on how to proceed. It's a very stressful situation. And be careful on the Life time Warranty issue - seems some charge you every time you need an adjustment, while others will show up and tell you you need 10 more piers, etc. And if you sell your home, they will charge a Warranty transfer fee.
