As most people already know, Texas is a very large state. Second largest in land area in the United States, with numerous cities and universities. The intention of this thread is to discover how each of Texas' public institutions of Higher Learning (Universities) stack up against each other (academically and the quality of instruction, socially, their endowments from alumni, retention and graduation rates, adult and transfer students numbers, and student population and demographics, all while ranking their respective cities for the students that attend the schools of each city and for the permanent residents whom live in each community (city, town or area). Furthermore, beyond the school experience, how is life for students and permanent residents in the surrounding cities/or area(s)? Does the university enrich the area greatly? Does it 'make' the city or town? Is the university a small or significant part of the area economically, socially, the quality of life, etc.?

As a whole, Texas is very weak in higher education compared to the education juggernauts California, New York, and Massachusetts. UT and Rice are the most nationally competitive universities in Texas. Each reside in wonderful cities.

It does not have the national clout overall that UT and Rice have.
