What are the best views of the Texas hill country? I've seen pictures of the famous "devil's backbone" between San Marcos and Blanco, but I don't understand the hype. Maybe I just need to see it for myself.

But are there any other good views, and how do they compare to this one?

Thanks.

Yes, coming here from Colorado I thought the Devil's Backbone was disappointing. Those hill top drives are not so spectacular in TX since everything has relatively low elevation changes.

One of my favorite scenic drives is this one http://www.city-data.com/forum/20303339-post2.html

The back roads between Lost Maples State Park and Garner State Park are pretty scenic if you like those hill top views and winding roads, some parts of it had much more altitude in the views. Lost Maples State Natural Area, Vanderpool, TX - Google Maps

Enchanted Rock State Park doesn't afford a huge elevation difference, but a unique experience combined with sweeping 360 degree views from the summit of the rock.

I love Texas (primarily for the people and culture), but the Hill Country is vastly overhyped. The only people who think the Hill country is truly impressive are people who have never spent much time out of Texas. It's pretty for Texas, but that's not saying much as Texas as a whole is one of the blander and/or uglier states in terms of geographic aesthetics.

I've always thought the Hill Country resembles a poor man's cross between southern California and the Smoky Mountains.

The most hyped areas of the Hill Country aren't where the better hills and views are, fortunately and unfortunately. Get out in Real and Bandera Counties and there are some impressive views.

There's a nice vista driving out 165 to Blanco south of 290.

But yeah, nothing spectacular - just nice.
