This one made me chuckle, but I think it's commonplace to make from of the American South as it is. Unfortunately, Texas is the easiest target because we are the biggest state in the south. It doesn't bother me, though. I'm here by choice. (although Rick Perry didn't do us any favors).

I agree. The politics are largely to blame for the ridicule we face. From Bush to Perry, a lot of damage has been done to our social reputation, and it makes ALL of us look bad, whether we support the GOP or not.

At the same time, aside from the politics, a lot of misconceptions still exist about the state itself and the people who live here, so it can't all be blamed on the Republicans. Even people who live in the more worldly areas of our country, such as California and the Bos-Wash corridor can be incredibly ignorant.

When I travel outside of the South, and people ask me where I'm from, after I give them the answer I can tell by the looks on their faces that "Texas" was just about the last thing they expected me to say.

Those on here that are personally against the present crop of Texas politicians and the conservative climate in general in Texas ,which rejects liberalism, are the ones claiming it is political. But in reality it is way deeper than politics. It is just the liberal media's agenda to highlight its perceptions of Texas and those that like that portrayal fall for it and parrot it.

I think Kathy nailed it about jealousy and Texas attitudes. And an old Texas saying reinforces it ... "It's a Texas thang, y'all wouldn't understand' !

Folks from other states are jealous of our state pride!!!!!

I am not a liberal but I do think Texas politics are a big part of the reason Texas is the butt of many jokes. Texas politicians take conservatism to extremes that shock most other conservatives around the nation. Nothing wrong with that, if that is how you want the political climate in your state to operate. Each state should be able to make that choice for themselves.

I think, more than politics though, is the very attitude your portray in your post Bob. I think things like the "Don't mess with Texas' campaign' and 'it's a Texas thang, y'all wouldn't understand...'. That type of general cockiness is what makes the state the butt of so many jokes. While most Texans are very proud of their state and that cocky attitude in general, most others just laugh at it.

I think everyone here wins, except those stuck in Texas that don't want to be there. Texans love to demonstrate their arrogance in their state (deserved or not) and those that don't live in Texas love to laugh at Texans for those very things (deserved or not). Texans want to be in Texas and think everyone else in the country is jealous. Those not in Texas laugh at Texans because the thought of living in Texas is the furthest thing from their minds.

I can hardly be called a liberal.

It's also pretty closed-minded to suggest that all opposition comes from sheer envy. Plenty of people outside of Texas are completely happy in the places that they live and have no desire to live here or follow the "Texan" way of life. That doesn't mean that they shouldn't be able to find fault with some of the things associated with this state.

Liberals aren't responsible for making Perry who he actually is. Liberals weren't responsible for our education crisis or the textbook scandal. Liberals weren't responsible for the secessionist movement. Liberals aren't responsible for the discrimination based on race and sexual orientation that still exist here.

There is so much material to work with.....(grin).

Some of the stuff that happens in Texas politics is so whacky that it has to be real. No body could make this bull hockey up.

Between the high school football dementia, and the border wars, and the TV reality shows, its a full scale comedy buffet. An embarrassment of riches, a cornucopia of laughs, a bowel of chilli with crackers .....Oh you get the idea .

A gun shop in a Dallas Greyhound bus station, with a sign for a "travellers special " on hand guns ?

A female Texas Ranger ? Is there such a thing, even in 2014 ?

Jim B.

Toronto.

I have to disagree about the jealousy thing. People outside of Texas who have never lived here just have a preconceived notion of what Texas is like based on ignorant stereotypes and what Hollywood movies and TV tell them.
