Hello, we really would love some advice. We currently live in California. My husband has rare cancer and he has been having to fly back and forth to MD Anderson almost every month. It has taken a toll. We have two children and I home-school them. Just to give you an idea about our situation. We are very serious about moving within the next few months, but we are not able to fly back and forth to check out places to live. So, MD Anderson is in Houston and my husband's company has an office located in Austin. He needs to be close to both, the definitely he needs to be close to MD Anderson. Maybe within two hours or so. We are not huge city people and we like a simple life. A family friendly and safe place. I was looking at one place, Brenham, and I saw some negative things about living there (drugs, etc). Can anyone advice us, please? Thank you.

There are drugs everywhere. Brenham is a very, very nice small city. You can't go wrong there.

Depending on where his office is located, the two cities are about 3 hours from each other.
Does he have to actually go to the office every day when he isn't having treatment? I would factor in the balance of office-time with treatment-time and swing my location towards one city or the other.

You might post in the Houston forum. We haven't lived there in a while, but always liked the smaller towns west of I-10 beyond Katy (Sealy, etc)

Good luck with your move and with your husband's treatment.

Brenham is very nice. Definitely a simple town. Bellville, too. Seriously there are drugs everywhere. It is an unfortunate fact of life. I doubt Brenham is much worse than where you are coming from. LaGrange might be more of a midway point and still be a pleasant town. I would certainly choose that over Columbus. I hope for the best for your husband.

I agree that La Grange is a very nice town. (might also look at Fayettevile & Round Top, which are tiny but very nice towns near La Grange).

I prefer all 3 to Brenham (which is also a nice town).

Also important....where in Austin is the office?

I don't know if you know this but MD Anderson has a Regional Care Center in Katy, which may be more convenient to any of the towns and cities being recommended.

MD Anderson in Katy: Regional Care Center | MD Anderson Cancer Center

Thank you so much everyone. I came home and was anxious to see if anyone responded. Ok, to answer some of your questions. I don't know the area, but it says if off of 360 (Capital of TX highway). My husband can log onto his computer and work from home (thank God), so he doesn't have to be there every day. Maybe a few times a month.

Thank you for the link on Katy. His cancer is so complicated and rare that I am sure he needs to be going to the main Md Andrerson.

Where on 360? (Capital of Texas Highway & what cross street)

It's a very long N/S artery.

Consider Bryan/college station area. Its between Austin and Houston, not exactly a straight line, but about a 90 min drive either way, depending, of course, on where your destinations are located. The cost of living is moderate, crime is low, schools are excellent, and they are developing new medical facilities. Of course, I realize your husband needs the specialists at MDA, but perhaps you could arrange some things, like blook work, x-rays, etc, from your home base. Good Luck!
