Amarillo is on and off in summer as far as temps, there are coolish days mixed in.

In August of this year, Amarillo had only 14 days above 90 and 0 days above 100 degrees. Whereas in August around Dallas, Wichita Falls, Waco, Laredo, Presidio, etc... You would find almost every day above 90 and many days above 100.

The hottest time of year in Amarillo is end of June to mid-July, after that the cooler days start mixing in. Then Sept usually gets much cooler earlier on than the rest of the state gets, so much shorter summers in general.

The only place comparable (even slightly cooler) than Amarillo in Summer is Fort Davis / Marfa area, but there is no population there (no jobs hardly).

Yah, in the summer anyhow.

Marfa/Alpine/Fort Davis is probably the most moderate climate in the US away from southern California.
There are some cold days in winter, but it warms up in the day usually. It's not quite southern California, but it is similar about half the year or more.

Too bad there is just nothing out there really, hard to live there unless you are retired.

Even places that are near the same elevation and the same lattitude usually have more extreme temps than Fort Davis area, it's partly the elevation, but likely it is also geography and wind funneling that causes it.

I don't know if anyone other than the other poster from the midwest has traveled north of Amarillo, but it is just as windy in the north than it is here in Amarillo. It also does not always smell of manure all of the time. It maybe has that smell a couple of times a year. I have been here just over 2 years and the negativity centered around the wind and smells always astounds me. It just doesn't happen very much.

I used to live in Amarillo. The wind changed direction one day and the stench of manure permeated our house. It was digusting. Locals always say "It's the smell of money"...lol

Amarillo is smack in the middle of farming and ranching country. There are a number of feedlots in the area. So, yes, on some days a feedlot odor will waft by. Usually one doesn't smell a thing.

If the occasional odor is too much for one's sensitive nose, then one is pretty much hosed anywhere in the country, for there's an odor of some kind in every town.

I'll take manure over the chemical industries any day...
