Is it just me, or has the quality of drivers in the Denton-Austin section of I-35E dropped like a ROCK over the last couple of years?

The rest of the state seems to be pretty much all business as usual, but as soon as I'm on I35E in North Texas it's like people have totally forgotten what "drive friendly" used to mean.

This might have something to do with the behavior you described:

Evermore people, continuous development from San Antonio to Oklahoma border, constant construction, and never ending traffic increasing commuting times I'm not surprised.

I bet we could reduce congestion by 20% if people would use the left lane for passing only. I really wish the DPS would enforce the law. It's a $200 fine.

Your right. They have big signs like that south of the border, and I remember seeing them in some US states as well. Shouldn't cost much to place like 5 of these each way from Austin to DFW.

That and when there is more than two lanes, each lane to the left should be passing the lane(s) to the right. No side by side driving, slow as molasses passing, or left lane hogging! If people could follow those simple rules then we wouldn't need autonomous cars to clear the flow.

It is the law in those areas that have appropriate signage. That's why you'll see those big signs along I35 in Texas. When they went up a few years ago, TxDOT put out a brochure that said that it was to make things easier for, specifically, drivers who were driving at the speed limit. It's not a license to speed. So I agree; if everyone obeyed the law (all traffic laws) and those lanes were only used by people who were passing and driving the speed limit, things would move more efficiently.

Also, another thing that I find very helpful and would love to see all through the state is no trucks allowed in the left-hand lane.

It's the law, but it's not enforced. I'll be driving from Austin to San Antonio twice in the next few days and I'm not looking forward to coming up behind those clueless nerf herders driving slow in the left lane. Evidently, they can't read the signs.

I drive from north of Austin to San Antonio frequently. Granted, I use 130 for a big chunk of it, but what I've found over time is that for the most part most people drive the speed limit or a hair over in all lanes, with a few driving slow in the right lane, unless, of course, there's a wreck or other actual reason for all traffic to be going below the speed limit, and a few who think that if they aren't going significantly over the limit even if all three lanes are packed that life as we know it is going to end. So unless you're looking to speed you shouldn't have a real problem.
