I just checked the home insurance premiums in Texas, Dallas and Austin and they seem to be ridiculously high (around $400/month in some cases). Any ideas why this is so? I thought neither Dallas nor Austin has weather that severe?

Texas has one of the highest, if not the highest, homeowners insurance rates in the US.

$400/mo is a pretty hefty charge. Ours is $1480/yr for a $279,000 home w/$30,000 outbuilding, $1400 deductible.

Have seen the "figures" in the last few years, but Tarrant County (Fort Worth) having more hail storm claims, at that time, of any place in Texas. My brother, and two cousins, have lived in Tarrant County for 40-50 years, owning homes, and have never had to replace their roofs because of age, just get NEW roofs every few years due to hail damage.

Only found out recently, that not only people in Tarrant Count, but as I remember, all of Texas shares in their claims.

Not like car insurance. Where your rate is partly determined by the claims in the county you live in, but also your own auto claims. Not so with your home owners insurance. I'm sure this is not "news" to many.

And I'm sure more agents or insurance folks will respond.

We have always managed to stay at around 0.5% of the home value, give or take (currently below 0.5%). So unless you have an insanely expensive home, that is quite high.
