Is the Abilene airport good for connections to Dallas? Does it have connections to other cities, for example Denver?

Abilene is high on the list, but I need a good connection for flights to see my family.

Would you recommend Abilene as a good place to retire? 1.5 years and counting till launch date!!!

Suggestions on things to do while we are scouting the area. (hope to take a trip out soon!)

Thank you!

Abilene's airport is small. It only has a few flights a day to DFW via American Airlines' regional jets. That's pretty typical of smaller towns in West Texas. The good thing is that the flights to DFW are only 1 hour long, so it's easy to connect to another destination in DFW.

Yes, Abilene is VERY popular with retirees. There are several good hospitals, and it's only 3 hours to Fort Worth to see better specialists. Abilene has 3 colleges, so you can go to football games, plays, concerts, etc. It also has a military base where military retirees can shop. The crime rate is pretty low, and housing is not too expensive. There are several good steakhouses, and plenty of other restaurants. It has a few nice museums, several historic sites, and some really fun festivals to attend. (West Texas Fair & Rodeo, Western Heritage Classic, Fort Griffin Fandangle, etc.)

If you're looking at smaller cities in Texas for retirement I would personally recommend San Angelo over Abilene. Not a whole lot of difference, but if your political views skew toward the progressive side San Angelo might be a better fit. I'm sure others on here will have their own opinions. I'm interested because I'm considering getting out of the rat race here in the capital city. As far as flights I'm pretty sure getting out of either city requires a connection in DFW. From Abilene you can drive to Dallas a little quicker than San Angelo to Austin This opinion comes from a native Texan, but not a whole lot of experience in either city.

Thank you for the information. Yes, San Angelo was a consideration. Looking at a few different cities. Tyler, and Nacogdoches on the east side of the state as well. Plus a few other states. Politically I am more conservative.

I would choose Tyler over Abilene or San Angelo in a heart-beat. Scenery alone puts Tyler as the top contender (of course, subjective point).

Tyler has the best medical facilities in East TX, way closer to DFW, Houston or Louisiana. You won't feel isolated in Tyler as you will in Abilene or San Angelo. I think, better shopping too...

Should posted on YOUR comment, my bad, but I doubt there is/was any confusion as to what I was referring too.

If you’re looking at West Texas, why not consider Amarillo? I recently had to spend a lot of time for work in West Texas and I found it to be my favorite. It’s greener and hillier than other West Texas cities (sans El Paso) and it’s airport has nonstop flights to DFW, Houston, Denver, and Las Vegas. Pablo Duro is very close by and very pretty as well.

I wouldn't call San Angelo "progressive" at all. Abilene is more religious since all 3 of those colleges are church-sponsored. But San Angelo isn't liberal by any means. Tom Green County went 63% Trump in 2016.

Amarillo gets really, really cold in the winter. Unlike the rest of Texas, it has actual blizzards. As long as you're OK with that, it might be worth consideration.
