Okay..I need to know and can't seem to get an answer without calling my insurance company...which I do tomorrow...

If I "home school" my teen for Drivers Ed. will my insurance be higher than if we go through a school?

My last child which was 8 years ago...we sent to Sears. It cost 350.00 ...8 years ago. I would like to do it at home so I don't have to drive across the county to get her to drivers ed.....your help please!

We are new to this as well, my son had just turned 16 and gotten his license in another state before our move to TX. In FL, driver's ed was a course option to take during high school, I don't think that's an option in TX. I do remember my insurance company telling us that when my son got his license in TX, there was a defensive driving course my son as well as my husband and I could take to lower our insurance rates - it sounded like it was a few hours in one day to complete. I haven't followed up on that. My dd will be driving in a couple of years so I will be watching this thread :-)

Their's lessons you can take that lasts for I think 2 weeks than you take the final driving test. It lowers your insurance.

My daughter got her license in September last year; we did home taught. You get a certificate just as you would from a brick and mortar school, and this is sent to your insurance company. No difference in rates.

Just because it's home taught, that doesn't mean it's not thorough. There is documentation you need to complete, lesson plans, etc. We bought one of the "drivers-ed in a box" things, and it was all planned for us, and printed out whatever forms/recordkeeping that was required.

Good luck!

personally my daughter and son took driver's ed from private company--two different ones -- was not offered by high schools by that point in time--and think they had bad instruction because they had some bad habits to break
my husband would have been much better teacher but 10-15 years ago I don't think "home-schooling" was an option for driver's ed certification--
maybe that has changed...
