Thanks, all, for your comments and insights.

However, I should probably let slip with a few details... for one, I grew up in East Texas. From my boyhood 'til leaving for college. I hated the heat/humidity and the slow pace. I needed to see the world, suck out the marrow of life and all that jazz. I hit the road for college and never looked back.

Well, now I'm a husband and a father. I'm beginning to understand why my own father decided to raise his family there. I have roots there, and I want my kids to be close to their kinfolk and heritage.

I think the only thing I'm going to regret about moving back is the weather. I love snowy Winters and Autumn foliage. I love mild Spring-time and breezy Northeastern Summers.

Friend... I would gladly appreciate any further specifics you could offer in this topic. I live in the heart of Anne Arundel (Annapolis), and would like to consider what I'm getting for what I'm giving up.

Matthaeus,
This years fall colors have been some of the most beautiful I've seen in the upper east Texas area. We had an early cold snap about 4 or 5 weeks ago and very little rain. I know it doesn't compare to the northeast...but everyone is talking about the colors this year. I was going to try to get some digital photos this weekend...before the leaves drop. I agree with you about raising kids here. I miss the best things about DFW....shopping, eating, shopping...shopping. but it's all worth it for the sake of our kids and the values that we've seen change since we moved here a year ago. I don't know that we will stay here once the kids are in college...but we will be here until then.....

I think your kids are going to feel the same way when they get around the age that you left.

Yeah, I was gonna say. I grew up in NE Texas and distinctly remember the fall foliage of that area. My family would day-trip to Paris, Tyler, Daingerfield, Pittsburg, Marshall, Longview, Kilgore, Palestine, etc. fairly often... lots of fond memories there. My father loved his Sunday drives. FWIW, I don't consider Southeast Texas East Texas either... can't put my finger on it, but the regions are very different to me.

How far south would you draw the line for East Texas?

Myself, I would draw the line just north of Beaumont. From north of Beaumont to Huntsville, north to Sherman.

I never really thought about it, but what txsizzler said sounds about right. I definitely don't consider Beaumont a part of East Texas proper... too much influence from Louisiana there. Actually, that plus the fact that we're coastal/swampy, hurricane-prone, and have a super humid climate, etc. probably have a lot to do with the differences between the regions for me, now that I think about it. The air just feels different down here... I guess because you really can feel it.
