I used to work in a restaurant in Dallas and every now and then the clapping thing would happen. It was awful. It's like mocking the poor person whose job isn't all that great anyway, who now has a big mess to clean up and now everyone is laughing and clapping that they made a mistake. I'm a Texan at heart, and I never clap in a restaurant, even a wings bar. Even IHOP. Let's be nice, folks.

Again, this is the first time I've done it here...and it will be the last. I worked in food service growing up as well, and got used to it. Knowing as I do now that it is not done here, it makes me feel bad about what I did.

Thanks to everyone for your replies! This is just another example of the regional differences in Texas...what a great state we have!

Geez, some of you need to lighten up.

Though I do agree clapping after someone has fallen down is pretty uncalled-for.

I agree with that...I don't know if that was something from East Texas or something from Houston...the person didn't say, and I didn't ask.

As far as clapping after someone dropped a dish, like I said, it's what I knew growing up and even when I worked as a server, I appreciated how it moved everyone past the awkward silence that would follow an event like that. Knowing that it is not done here, and knowing what some people who work here may feel about it, I do feel terrible about what I did.

Oh gosh, sorry my tone was so foreboding! You didn't run over anyone's do with your car or anything! I like your I-won't-do-it-again attitude . See, a true Texan- finds out people don't like it, says he's sorry and he won't do it again. I guess my memories of being a server are....ugh....so the clapping was more like salt on the wound, so to speak. Not really *that* big of a deal. Sorry that I made it one!

Never seen anyone clap after a fall here. Some middle/high school kids may get a laugh out of it though.

I've had my share of BS jobs in the past (though none in food). Sometimes the light hearted nonsense helped the day go by faster. You can't take yourself too seriously in a near-poverty wage job or it will eat you alive!

It seems low class to clap.

When it happened around me in a school cafeteria, it was usually a fellow student that dropped the plate or glassware, not an employee of the place. So this would have presented itself as an opportunity to humiliate the person even further, whether it was a buddy, or better yet, a bully. Rubbing salt in the wound is right. They were embarrassed enough, and hoped no one would notice.

I've lived in Texas all my life (North Central and East Texas) and I've never heard of this.

Well, having been a waiter for many years we servers consider it rude and tasteless when someone claps. Waiters (most) work hard to take care of their guests and can get busy and stressed. It's really not very funny to a server when he/she drops a dish and people laughing about it? yeah that doesn't help the situation either.
