We have a possibility of being transferred here. Where is close enough to live? My husband prefers not to drive more than 1/2 hour, he would be working at the southern tip of SPI. I was looking at Harlingem...is that really close enough? I've heard it's 30min but mapquest says an hour. Keep in mind he would not be driving during peak rush hour times. We have two small children but homeschool so schools are not a problem; just a safe neighborhood!

Yes, Harlingen would be a nice place to live. It's not an hour from SPI - 30 mins is reasonable and there's a back way to go on 510 through Bayview and Laguna Vista. I don't really think there is much of a rush hour in Harlingen. You will find traffic headed to SPI during Spring Break/Easter break tho. Speaking of Bayview, that's a beautiful little area to live. Not sure about shopping tho, you would have to go to Harlingen or Los Fresnos for that. Also, if your kids are involved in activities such as soccer etc, Harlingen would have that.

How is Los Fresnos? Housing looks inexpensive, is there a reason?

Actually, Los Fresnos would be a good location to locate. It's close to SPI, about 15 to 20 minutes and is close to both Harlingen and Brownsville for shopping.

There's also some good neighborhoods including this new development:

There are also some good neighborhoods in north Brownsville to consider such as this one:

And this master planned community off of Hwy 100 and Hwy 77 just north of Brownsville and west of Los Fresnos.

Good luck

I don't know much about Los Fresnos except it's on the way to the beach, and when you drive through, you better watch the speed limit - it's a speed trap. It seems like a nice, smaller town. My nephew practices roping at the rodeo arena there. That town has not changed much in the 20+ years I've been back to the valley to visit.

oh wow, not THAT is a huge thing for Los Fresnos. It looks nice and there's the rodeo grounds my nephew ropes at. There's just a bunch of junk and a road rally place around there now. Interesting!
