Hi, I'm moving to Toledo soon and would like to know about a couple of neighborhoods I'm looking at.

One is around Larchmont Elementary; Slater to Amesbury. Is that a pretty safe neighborhood, for taking walks and for walking to the stores at Miracle Mile?

The other neighborhood is just east of Reynolds, between Bancroft and Dorr.

Both have very affordable rentals, most with yards (some nicely fenced) and garages. I'm a single mom w/ a teenager and a toddler. I'd like to be able to play in the yard, sit on my porch, meet my neighbors, take walks, push the stroller to the grocery store and not feel like I have to look out my window every time I hear a door slam or raised voices, you know?

Which of these places is more friendly? If you wouldn't recommend these what similarly priced, but more suitable areas should I look in?

Thanks so much for your help.

I would choose the location near Larchmont. You're farther away from the comforts of "suburbia" but you're still in a stable area conveniently near retail. If you go the public school route, your teenager would be going to Start HS (rated Excellent by the State of Ohio) vs. Rogers HS if you lived by Reynolds (rated Effective by the State of Ohio). The overall culture of these two schools goes in Start's favor by a significant margin as well.

I agree with CincyExpert on the schools. Both are tolerable public high schools. Start is probably the best.

The neighborhood around Slater,Amesbury, is pretty safe. As far as walking to Miracle Mile, I think your immediately neighborhood streets are pretty safe, you would just have to be cautious with Jackman and Laskey, as theyre large, busy streets. Its not exactly a walkable downtown business district. Just a huge strip mall. Its completely doable though.

The area you mention off Reynolds between Dorr and Bancroft would be fine too. I dont know if a lot of the streets over here have sidewalks however. I know ive been down a lot that dont. Its more of a suburban layout as far as the types of houses and streets are. Not as pedestrian friendly. The first area you mentioned, at least the residential part, is pretty pedestrian friendly. Over off Reynolds, you wont find many places that are within a reasonable walking distance.
