Cold weather still has a grip on much of the US. It will be a few days before flights are operating normally.

It's 14 degrees in SC right now.

Not even close. I say this as someone who just stepped off of a plane yesterday after my first leg and had to rent a car and drive 5 hours because Delta couldn't get me to where I needed to be until later this week.

Every year, this same thing happens. Lots of stories on the news about Christmas travelers stranded by snow at some airport or another.

It seems pretty obvious to me that winter flights should not be planned through some of the oft closed airports unless the travel is absolutely necessary and no way around it. In that case, an option B should be already planned out in case the traveler gets stuck.

This stuff happens over and over and over and every year, multiple times a year, it catches all the travels completely by surprise.

Yesterday night into this morning Jet Blue canceled all their flights to/from JFK, LGA, EWR as well as BOS. But other carriers also had cancellations such as American Eagle that had frozen fuel and frozen deicing fluid problems. The airlines are hoping have things back to normal within 24-48 hours but I think it is going take longer than that.

This year it isn't only the weather issue. There is the added factor of new FAA regulations (that just came into effect) which have lengthened the rest period for pilots between flights.

It's not quite that easy. Travelers are often affected not just by where they are traveling and the locations they are connecting through, but also where their plane is coming from. Airports in California and Florida have been experiencing extensive delays as well for this reason. It's the ripple effect.
