If you go, would you report back and let me know if you can find any Kim Jong Un souvenir soap-on-a-rope available anywhere? I keep checking with our local Dollar Store and they "deny" ever hearing of such a thing.
Why in the world would anybody want to visit North Korea? It seems like about every other day, I read about them detaining some person or other for no good reason.
I would reconsider visiting North Korea. It's not exactly the safest place to visit in the world.
Actually, it probably is the safest place in the world to visit. What do you think would happen to a traveler in North Korea? The crime rate is the lowest in the world, and if there was a single western traveler arrested and being held in a prison camp there, you would certainly have heard about it on Fox News and News World Daily, which are are apparently your main sources of information about the world.
There is no independent travel to North Korea, you have to book all arrangements in advance with the government travel department, which will escort you 24 hours a day. It is very expensive.
With all the handwringing on this thread about the danger, does anybody have any examples of "what can go wrong"?

Please show us the link to the North Korean incident you are talking about.
In fact, show us an incident in which a US traveler had to be evacuated from any country, and did not have to pay the government back for the cost of being rescued. If the US government has to foot the cost of rescuing any American traveler abroad, the government takes the passport until the traveler reimburses them for the cost of the repatriation. Even if it's from Canada. In most cases, if a US traveler stupidly gets into trouble abroad, the only thing the US government does is refer them to a good local lawyer. Which is why there are hundreds of Americans serving long prison terms overseas for drug crimes. And US taxpayers not lifting a finger to help them.
So yes, if you are traveling with drugs or committing other kinds of crimes, it is a good idea to avoid countries that have police and law enforcement. What would be your guess about the number of foreign nationals who are serving time in American jails and prisons? And, now, what did you say were the countries "too dangerous" to travel in?
Almost two percent of all adult males in the USA are in prison. (Which, by the way, is higher than the number of North Koreans in prison in their own country.) Do you think two percent of all Americans traveling to "dangerous countries" are in prison there, or that you precious taxpayers are paying to get them out?
