Why would you be paying for a service you didn't use?
We didn't. But it's automatically added to the bill at certain hotel chains, so we had to ask that it be removed when we checked out. This took time and hassle, and eliminates fast check out services. PITA.
The easy fix is to remain loyal to one or two brands and most if not all of those fees will be waived due to your status.
I'm sure you'll disagree, but I'm betting that the high end resorts and hotels ARE going to start saying no, just like the airlines have. Or you're going to have to use points, just like the airlines have. Too much profit to be made from this, as the airline industry has proven.

Generally business travelers such as myself aren't at high end resorts or other high traffic tourist areas unless it is for a conference or something. Airline status gets me a bunch of freebies that others currently have to pay for and I am guessing my hotel status will do the same thing.

I think that is her point: watch out: I know a lot of hotels, in resort areas are adding daily resort fees. They have been doing this for a few years whether you use the resort facilities like the pool makes no difference. Many chains used to offer free internet service in the meeting room area, most don't anymore.

annerk: many people do not travel enough to build up frequent guests points plus, no, not all will wave the fees regardless: some yes, again only for the most frequent guests.

You're wrong. They already waive these fees as a benefit for having frequent guest status with them. For example Hilton and Marriott waive Internet fees and more. IHG waives resort fees, gives free local phone calls and WiFi, and a few other things to those with status.
You don't have to ask for it to be waived, it's automatic just like the welcome gift and upgrade.
If anything the hotels are getting more generous with their frequent guest programs. (They have raised the number of points to redeem free rooms, but many of us have so many that we donate a weeks worth to charity every year.)

I'm finding that most of the meetings and conferences I attend any more have added free WiFi in the meeting/conference areas for attendees, and parking and resort fees are waived for us as well. Savvy meeting planners are getting smart about these details.
I'm gold with Hilton, Platinum with Marriott, Ambassador with IC (which gives automatic gold with all IHG properties.)
You can be gold with Hilton just by carrying the branded AmEx and spending $20K (?) a year on it. Marriott has a similar co-branded card.
