I will fly for the first time this October, I will hopefully get a window seat as right now I prefer it.
It's a good idea to join an airline's frequent flyer program even if you only travel once or twice a year. Membership almost always allows you to pick a seat about 60 days before the flight.
Best not to leave it to the airline to allocate a seat to you since you might get a window seat over the wing.
Check the airline's site for seat plans, or check on this site which shows the seating layout of all aircraft types: Browse by Airline - SeatExpert
Window for any flight 2 hours or less where I don't have to get up
Aisle for anything 3 hours or more where I don't have to bother anyone in case I want to get up.
Between 2 & 3 hours I'll take whatever's closest to the front so I get out quicker.
I've never lost my love of flying. And the world is such a fascinating place when viewed from above. The perspective is so revealing, even close to home over a place one thinks one knows. And away? mountains and deserts, rivers and lakes, towns and cities, remote lands of all sorts - the view is amazing. I spend half the flight gazing out the window.
So, I always get a window seat as far from the wing as possible, and on the side of the aircraft where the sun won't blind me - again, when possible.
As much as I love the window seat for staring outside, I prefer the aisle seat so I can periodically stretch my legs into the aisle and get up for walks/trips to the bathroom since my knees start aching after a while.
Booked a flight today on a wee regional jet with a 1-2 seating configuration in economy. So you can get a seat that's both window AND aisle.
