Specifically I am talking about flying Lufthansa into Frankfurt where we have a long lay over. I looked up what Lufthansa has but it looks like you need to fly First Class or be some kind of a member. Is there a way to just pay for one day and use their facilities? How about other airlines? Does the airport itself has some sort of club facility?
I think United club members can use Lufthansa lounges. You still have to have special status, as far as I know - like you've traveled x number of miles this year with them. Lufthansa lounges are nice - especially compared to domestic US airline lounges I've been in.
Star Alliance Gold members can use the Lufthansa lounges if they're on Lufthansa metal. That's Premier Exec (50,000 miles) on United or the equivalent on Air Canada. You can buy an annual United club pass and that will get you in. It's $550 or 70,000 FT miles. Other than that, you need a Lufthansa business class ticket.
For Delta sky club for instance, you can use it under these conditions (last time I checked anyways, airlines are constantly changing):
-You are flying first class international
-You are a Delta Gold or higher status FF member flying any class international
-You are a member of the Delta Sky Club (pay an annual fee).
-You are invited by one of the above as a guest (I think each of the above is allowed one guest)
-I think there are day passes also - i.e. $25 or $50...not cheap
Otherwise be advised that entries to these clubs are strictly enforced by the "dragans" at the entrance...you won't be able to sweet talk your way in.
Be advised also, while some of these clubs are peaceful relaxing oasis in an airport, some of these clubs suck - bad wifi, crowded, noisy children. The Delta clubs in the US generaly fall into this category. Others are really nice - good food, good adult beverages, some have showers. Frankfurt Delta sky club as I remember was dead, we had the club to ourselves.
As GeoffD pointed out, StarAlliance Gold status (50,000 miles and $5,000 annually or million miles lifetime) will get you in, as will an annual membership. Another option is an airline lounge pass vendor (either one-time or annual). Priority Pass is the big one. https://www.prioritypass.com/lounges...4-a54fb9cd4617
Have you used it yet? I'm going to use it for the first time later this week as I'm en route to Hawaii. I've been curious to know what is actually "free" at the priority pass lounges.

you just have to look up the lounges who participate and food(usually snackish vs full meals) beer/cocktails, wifi is typical. The centurion lounge at Dfw is cover by the platinum card and offered real meals, showers, wifi, full bar, massage and manicures for free
