How did you rent a car without a credit card? It's also unclear - have you paid anything for the damage yet? If not (and that's pretty strange), then you have ALOT of control on contesting the repair charges, you hold the cards, even more then if you paid by CC.

The fact that they rented out the car again I don't think is relevant. That's not your concern unless of course the car gets additional damage.
I think it'sd very relevant in that rental companies will often include charges for lost revenue. If you can show that the vehicle was still rentable then they can't get you for this except maybe the time to actually repair.

Nope, your insurance company isn't going to "get involved" and do anything until the company submits a claim. Unlike the OP, they know better than to manufacture a problem where none may exist. And if anything, having a "deep pockets" party involved will likely get the rental company more aggressive.
