I joined a new Meetup group that happens to focus on going to different travel destinations around the world.

For a trip on which I'm considering going, there is one price listed for those who choose to have a roommate. And then there is another price for those who choose to have a private/single room.

Most people who are going are complete strangers.

The price for choosing to have my own room, not surprisingly, is higher (by about $300-$400).

When you travel alone, but are apart of a group of strangers, do you usually opt to share a room with someone? Or do you pay to have your own?

If you've chosen to share with a stranger, have you ever had any major problems? If so, what were they?

Thank you for sharing .

Much better to work out very well
Than to work out horribly.

Probably it'll be ok

I am fine with it but only with people who don't snore, which is a deal killer.

Right.

I do worry about this.
I traveled abroad with someone I did know (a friend) about a year ago, and she drove me crazy. She didn't snore. But when we'd get back very late, around 11pm, she wanted to sit on her laptop and type loudly for 2 hours, or she'd want to talk on the phone incessantly. It caused a rift throughout the trip .

That was my last travel experience, and it wasn't the best situation.

So, I'm a lot more nervous in partnering with a complete stranger.

Personally, I would pay to have my own room.

That seems an oxymoron.

If you're in a meetup group you'll be meeting up.
That's rather the whole point of it all.

Make the acquaintances or even friendships that are appropriate.
Then the decision becomes whether to share Tom or Dick or Harry.
Or to pay extra and have your own.

Just to clarify your unhelpful point above:

In this particular group many of the women who travel are already friends.

There is no oxymoron here.

Unless you have to make the rooming decision BEFORE the trip, and before you've had the opportunity to meet anyone.

I don't see it as an oxymoron.

I would pay the extra to have my own room. I'm a night owl and I snore. I wouldn't want to ruin anyone's vacation.

I used to be in a ski club that took buses to Colorado (from TX)....unless you went with a friend, you would be sitting next to a stranger. When it was time for bed, you put the bunk together and slept nose-to-toes. Then you would be in a room or condo with a stranger.

I never had an issue with it.
