As my father aged, he made a rule: If he croaks while I'm on vacation, I'll find out when I get home. He saw no sense in destroying a holiday.
I 've come to believe that he was right and we've instituted that same policy. Don't call us if something happens to our siblings. Don't call us if our house burns down. Don't call us if the dog dies. And we don't give anybody our itinerary for this reason.
Harsh? Maybe. But we both know that death is part of life. It's gonna happen regardless of where in the world we happen to be located.
I've returned early twice, both for the same reason and both from beachfront properties in Mexico. The summer humidity was unbearable, so back in the car we went. If a plane fare penalty had been involved, we would have stuck it out in our a/c hotel room.

Traveling is much easier if you don't have businesses, employees, farms, livestock, kids, neighbors, family, rental property....
But that never slows us down. 50 trips so far in 2017,. Gone ALL of 2016. ( No issues forced us home!). But there was a lot to do when we finally got home. May never catch up!
Only once for me. Not really sure what I was thinking when I planned the vacation. This was well before the days of the internet so I did not really have much to pre-plan with. Like most of my vacations the only thing set in stone were my flights from home and back to home. Would be gone 21 days. Flew down to Vegas and spent one night. Then I got a rental car and hit the highway. Got back to Vegas about 14 days later. Was so tired I did not feel like doing anything and could not see paying for a hotel if I was not going to do anything. So I changed my ticket and flew home 5 days early.
We both broke out in an indescribably itchy rash from the bedsheets in the hotel the first night and it got worse the 2nd night--even after they had moved us to a different room.
We ended up going home from that one because it literally hurt to get dressed.
Once when we were visiting my husband's family because I had a stomach virus that kept me in the bathroom constantly and the relative we were visiting had a houseful of people and only one bathroom
We've been relatively lucky over the years.
