Back in 2004, I flew to Bangkok. No way was I going to take a 16 hour non-stop Thai Airway flight from L.A., so being the big Wuss that I am, I chopped it up, a layover in Hawaii, a layover in Tokyo, and then onto Bangkok!
Now, at 68YO, I find myself crawling out of my skin even on a 45 minute flight from Las Vegas to L.A.!
Is it my age? "Why is it taking so damn long to get there!!!"
Thank God I did most of my foreign travels when younger and I still would love to do one last trip to Israel. Alright, if I do: Layover in New York City (Yikes! That's 5 hours from Las Vegas!), then onto London, another layover, then to Rome, another layover, and finally to Tel Aviv!
A long time ago I was stuck on a C-5 Galaxy MAC flight for 18 hours. We refueled over the Atlantic several times. There were no windows.
Never again. Never.
Seattle to Moscow was 11 hours right over northern Canada and Greenland. That I can deal with provided I have a window seat. Take off watch a movie and eat. Cuddle up by the window and go to sleep. Wake up for the desent into Shremetevo. Same in reverse.
trouble with these transpac flights to Asia is you cross the date line and when you land it's the next day or even the day after and you'll probably miss your flight, you have to leave a day or two early if you want to get there on time. of course going the other way, you have to leave tomorrow to get there today
I remember there was a Singapore airlines flight from Newark to Singapore. It was business only because the weight restriction to have enough fuel for such flight. It was cancelled several years ago.
I go to China and sometimes India once a year. My flight from Shanghai to Detroit last Friday/Saturday was 16 hours. Could I do 4 hours more? Yeah probably IF I lived in Detroit, it's pushing the limits of human endurance for sure. But the problem is I had a layover and another flight to my home base.
The big difference for many people is if they can sleep on the plane or not, I can't. Or the seating arrangement - I usually get upgrades but, for those stuck in the middle coach seat - no I couldn't do 8 hours on that.

I think the last several hours on the plane are exponentially more tortuous than the first hours. The first 8-10 hours are not bad but from 10 to 14 to 16 is so horrible .
Quite honestly, Id like a 20 hour floight a lot better than a ten hour flight looking forward to another one tomorrow. With a 6-12 hour layover.
