It's really nothing unusual, but I've seen it on every flight: how tiny everything begins to look as we gain altitude. That we are able to do this at all is a constant wonder to me, and it never ceases to fascinate.

On a BA flight from London to LA on the polar route, the captain alerted us to get on the left side of the plane because we were going to go over Greenland. He said it was the clearest outlook he had seen in 20 years of flying. It was so clear we could see the buildings on the ground!

middle of the night and I was the only pax awake on a trans-Atlantic flight gazing off to the North. Way off past the horizon I clearly saw the darkened sky lift up slightly as if it were a window shade and in the opening was a set of fingers and a pair of aged eyes with white bushy eyebrows staring our from a very well lit space behind the darkness. Our eyes met for an instant and suddenly the opening snapped shut. Called the flight attendant over and told her about what I had seen and she said they see that most every late-night crossing on her route.

When I was a kid we were in our Mooney M20J over the Topa Topa range in Ventura County, crossing the mountains heading for Kern County. We knew that another aircraft was in the area but could not get a visual on them. Somewhere over the mountains another Mooney M20J painted the same color as ours flew by about 500 feet from us. We could see them and they could see us for about a second. Made me realize that I need to always be watching when flying.

Flying over the Alps from Europe to the Middle East.

I thought it was an amazing sight; the mountains seemed endless and rather forbidding.

I was not on this flight, but my company sent a group of us to Florida for a conference. The guys who left early were surprised to see the launch of the Space Shuttle from their airplane.
This is not the launch that they saw, this is STS-133, but I like this video.

The Pacific Ocean. As a child on flights to Hawaii, looking down at water and knowing it will only be water for six hours. Nowhere to land.

I remember seeing the icebergs near Greenland and being amazed by them... and the blue-green color of the water. Flying into Iceland was also really wonderful. It was like approaching a different planet. I'd love to go back!
