Hey,
I'll be in Bruxelles for a couple of days and want to make a day trip. Some possibilities are Ghent, Antwerp, Brugges, and Waterloo battleground.
If you have knowledge or experience of these places please share. The personal perspective is important othewise I'd just read a guidebook. However, I know the huge pool of resources here at CityData
Would one of these places be more affordable than the others (I'm as student)?
I would definitely go for Brugge. Love it there! It's like stepping back in time and the old city is walkable. Also great pubs for beer if you like it! It's a beer lovers heaven!
The city is beautiful - I mean really beautiful. Fantastic history. Enjoy!
Thanks for the responses, I'm leaning towards Brugges right now. I would live to visit Antwerp also but the fact is I only have about 4 hours to spare and Brugges is the smaller city.
I agree Chielgirl, Belgium is a great secret in Europe (not that its a secret to Europeans but it isnt really a huge destination for Americans like France, UK, Italy, or Germany.
I've already spent a weekend in Bruxelles and enjoyed it so much I'm visiting it again on my Eurail Pass trip. The Belgian beer was quite surprising in its quality and is supposed to rival German and Czech beer.
Brugges is more touristy than Antwerp, but I think it is the better city for a short visit, especially given that you only have 4 hours (!) to spare. The atmosphere is wonderful. If you haven't tried them, look for "La Guillotine" or "Delirium Tremens" beers; you'll recognize them by the pink elephants on the label. They are very special and have won a lot of "best beer" contests and such.
