Hi All,

My family of 6 visited DisneyWorld for the first time last year. We all loved it and plan to go back in late April 2010. While we LOVE the Disney parks, I would like for my children to experience non-Disney fun also. The goal is to find things to do that are relatively inexpensive (less than $20 pp), but will greatly interest the kiddies. Any ideas? We will have 8 full days in Orlando, FL and I'd like to dedicate at least 2 or 3 to non-Disney stuff.

Thanks in advance!

One of the last times I went to Orlando we drove out to Cocoa Beach for the day (twice, Universal doesn't have enough to keep us occupied for a week). It took about 1 1/2 hours each way. You could also go to Cape Canaveral, that was fun when I went as a kid.

I would make three recommendations in the relatively close vacinity:

Wekiwa Springs State Park has a spring fed pond that is available for swimming. It is a nice and quiet getaway from Orlando and all the noise. Also, there is plenty of canoeing opportunities.

Wekiwa Springs State Park Nature Adventures: Wekiva River, Orlando, Florida

Also, a trip to Tampa and Ybor City is really pretty interesting. There are a lot of tours in the area.

There is also Caee Canaveral on the east coast of Florida.

Kennedy Space Center/Cape Canaveral is a good day trip. There is a space museum with a giant indoor Saturn V launch vehicle along with a big rocket park and such.

I'd skip the bus tours unless there's a shuttle on the pad. I worked there for several years and there's not much to see outside the visitor center other than empty launch gantries. If there's a rocket on the pad, it can be neat to see, but the buses don't really get close to anything. Then again, I think some of the tours stop at the assembly areas where there are observation platforms for the clean rooms where they will have satellite and space station modules laid out on the floor for you to see.

Cocoa beach has a nice stretch of sand if you want to hit the beach. Go to CCB Pier for the center of the beach scene. Just south of Kennedy Space Center. Ron Jon's surf shop can be fun to visit (open 24 hours if you need that 3AM bar of wax. Haha.)

Try the Science Center.

It has a great large screen cinema which covers the domed roof- the seats are reclined for your viewing.
