Hi all,
My husband and I want to go to a beach within driving distance of Pittsburgh. We usually go to Ocean City but we've been there so many times that we're looking for something new. I'm afraid to choose a new place and regret it later on though. We're in our late 30's, no kids and we're not big party people so we're looking for a cool beach that's pretty and not crowded with a million people. We'd like to ride our bikes and have some great seafood. How is Virginia Beach? Could any of you suggest any other beaches?
Thanks so much!
Jaimee

Virginia beach is waaay worse than Ocean City (Maryland, at least--never been to NJ). It's pretty trashy, in my opinion (people wearing inappropriate tshirts with baby in one hand and case of beer in the other).

Outer Banks are by far my favorite, but that's a bit of a trek. We went up to Cape May in New Jersey a few weeks ago and had a blast (very quaint, walkable, friendly), but I would imagine it's going to be a lot more crowded now that it's summer.

We did not like Virginia Beach or Myrtle Beach at all. The best beaches on the East coast, imo, are on the Jersey shore...Barnegat, Ocean City, Spring Lake, Avon, Cape May, etc.

OC, MD is not my cup of tea, either, and generally filled with tons of college kids. How about one of the DE beaches? They look to be much quieter.

Pittsburgh to Ocean City is about 7 hours; Pittsburgh to Charleston is about 10 hours; if you're willing to drive the extra 3 hours each way, think you would definitely enjoy it. Lots to do and see as well as plenty of nice beaches to relax on.

I would vote against Virginia Beach as well, went there once and that was enough for me. I'm not a big fan of Myrtle Beach either.

Agree with the others regarding VA. Beach, but Sandbridge, an island just south of VA beach, is very peaceful, and a great place for bikes.

How are the beaches along the eastern shore of Virginia? You know in the vicinity of Accomack and Northhampton counties?

The Dewey Beach/Rehobeth Beach area of Delaware might be just what you're looking for. It's not overly crowded, not too built up and has miles and miles of beautiful sand. And, the kids might enjoy the ferry ride over to Cape May, NJ and back.

Ive been to VA Beach 3-4 times and i like it. Its more of a family beach, there isnt a lot going on at night. Myrtle Beach is nice too, there is much more activity and things to do after dark. I agree Outer Banks is awesome and the Jersey Shore is nice as well, ive always liked Wildwood Crest myself. I dont think you can go wrong with any of the options, a trip is what you make it, but i agree you should try something new!
