My wife and I are considering buying a house near the Mormon Temple in Richland, WA. Does anyone have any experience they would like to share regarding whats it like to live near the Temple?

If the Jello is always sold out on the nearby grocery store shelves, you'll know why.

I've got several coworkers who live over there with no issues. There's more traffic at a temple than if there were just a couple of houses there, of course. But it's on a main road with lots of commercial developments that bring in more noisy traffic than the temple. And most Mormons are very quiet and reverent when going to the temple, so noise shouldn't be much of a concern. I wouldn't think living near a temple, especially a smaller one like we have here, should be an issue at all.

Hello, we moved to Richland a year ago. We can see the temple from our house. Just friendly neighbors, nice family atmosphere.

You have to convert and start tithing 15% of your pre-tax income. Other than that, no issues. Seriously, I would only be concerned about traffic and that there might be a greater concentration of Mormons there.

Are you mormon? If so it would probably be great.

I am an atheist and live right near a church, and honestly I wish I would have reconsidered because they are so noisy on Sunday mornings that they wake up my baby.

If noise is an issue I might reconsider.

Red face Thank you for the feedback

Thanks for bringing up the issue of traffic. I will check out the situation this Sunday to see how it's flowing, and the noise level. We don't buy much Jello, so no problem there.

I do have a non-Mormon (female) colleague who in her own words "lives close enough to bounce a beer bottle off the roof of that thing" - and she does not seem to mind it.

I would think they might come round trying to recruit you more often than otherwise if you are close if only because it's convenient.

I guess your bottom line depends on how you would feel living next to a Mormon temple - personally I wouldn't like it, but it may not bother you.

If you don't mind looking at the bugle boy everyday, go for it.

Tithing is 10%, by the way. I thought everybody knew that the word "tithe" means 1/10.

Most temples are open six days a week for some pretty long hours. Because people can attend the temple at any time of the day they wish, there are seldom any periods of really high traffic. Also, it would be pretty unusual for a Mormon family to specifically look for a home near a temple. And even if there were a "greater concentration of Mormons there," what difference would that make? Mormons make pretty good neighbors actually.
