Chicago might reach 100 shot before month ends before NYC, Philly etc that is alarming rate

In the first five days of 2016, police in Chicago say shootings are already up more than 176% — 47 compared with 17 in 2015. Ten of this year’s shootings were homicides.

I think St Louis is at 0. But we can go from 0 to 100 in 2 seconds. I am hopeful that this will be a better year than last year. Ever since September 2013 we've been going crazy. I think it's slowing down but still... I don't know. This is such a great city with great people and we don't deserve the violence.

Richmond already has 4, and has had 10 since December 10. It's been since 2012 that the city had 10 in a 30-day period. I don't expect that rate tof continue, but if it did, Richmond would be well on its way to 100+ homicides, a figure that was surpassed annually for much of the 80s and 90s...

You could probably attribute this partially to the fact that the now former police chief was fired in light of that shooting scandal and replaced by someone else in the interim. This usually results in some sort of small levels of chaos and increased numbers - at least from what I've seen. If you look at the totals between say about 2008 and 2015 for the city, the most major spike was in 2012. That happened to be the first year of the now former police chief - changing of the guards from a previous one. Then the numbers went down again to pre-2012 levels in the years after. Hopefully we won't see a spike and things will go back down to "improving" but you never know. It could happen.

Chicago is increasingly unsafe due to rise in gang violence. The widespread availability of guns is no doubt a factor, but fear and poverty are powerful motivators on either side of the debate.

The violence has been kept to a handful of areas - the city is an absolute tale of two cities. I'm not saying that it's a good thing, but it's also a sad reality. There are many parts of the city that are actually very safe and completely different than the areas with the not so good things happening. This is also a sad reality in the US (and a few other countries) as far as big cities goes - there are good and bad areas. However, it should become less and less bad - but that's easier said than done.

We had 26 in Colorado Springs for 2015 (even with the mass shootings in October). About average.

I don't think we've had any so far this year, but the weekend is just around the corner!

Stay safe.
