Yes - very interesting.
There is a book called Human Monsters that is sort of an encyclopedia of serial killers and mass murderers that we have on record throughout history. It's fascinating.
I have always found them fascinating. Of course very disturbing as well but for some reason endlessly fascinating.
How their minds work and why are they so different then other people. What went wrong to make their minds so mixed up.
Haven't you in your own life, looked at something strange in your behavior and wondered where it came from, like a fear of spiders or being claustrophobic?
The endlessly fascinating question is are these people just born bad, with something physiologically wrong in their brain or does something go wrong in their upbringing.
If you look into the lives of people like Darmer, Gacy, Bundy and Gien, its not clear what went wrong.
If you read up on a lot of different ones - you can see that most are typical anti-social people (with anti-social disorder, that is). They don't feel empathy or sympathy and they get strange urges to kill. Usually they experienced major trauma very early in life.
No, of course it is not wrong to pity these people. Sure, give 'em life behind bars or the death penalty, but they are still people in the grip of something they can't necessarily control. I actually don't pity them, but I do not hate or fear them either. Often I have some sympathy for them.
When I was in grad school, one of my assignments was to come up with a subject area and then make a bibliography of where all information about that subject is located. I thought this sounded boring, so I started thinking of the wackiest subject area in which to find resources ... I settled on serial killers. Turns out the professor was also a serial killer buff, so after I was done, he incorporated my research into his with my blessing and an A.

I read a book about Leonard Lake and Charles Ng. They were some real winners. They had a bunker/dungeon set up where they would take kidnapped victims and videotape their escapades with them. Then they would kill them. Truly horrible.

I know what you mean, they were unusual because there were two of them working together. Fascinating story that two people SO sick found each other.
