I really enjoy Poco & Mom's. As far as I know it is the only place in Tucson selling New Mexico style food and as someone that grew up on green chili (and needs a fix every so often) this place is a necessity. I think they have the best chile rellano in Tucson.

Hole in the walls sums it up nicely, it has about 10 tables inside, 3 or 4 outside with seating capacity of what, 35-50? I wish the tortilla chips were more consistent (they are frequently overcooked), but that's my only real complaint.

Don't forget to ask for the paper that will give you a free entree after you buy 9!

I haven't tried a relleno yet, but after my green chile sourcream sauce enchilada, I will give their rellenos a shot. Post back, if you get there before me. I love looking at their online menu, by the way. Their breakfasts look very interesting!
I was going to make a trip to the east side today and check it out, but noticed they are "Closed Mondays"

Hmm that place is definitely going to be on my list for when I get homesick for New Mexican food.

We tried Eegees today and while I thought the sub wasn't anything special, I really enjoyed the fries and the eegee. I got the lucky lime and piña colada and the kids picked lemon.

eegee's keeps plugging along and always has a decent crowd at lunch time...some may find it, uh, "unremarkable", but it's a local legend and many like the unchanged no-surprises feel of the place....cleverly-named flavors of the month, like Holly Berry for December.....

Tucson is lucky to have a wide variety of great spots, including many non-chains....seems like on any Friday eve, any place that's mediocre or better is packed.....

Come August/September there will be lots of places here that roast Hatch Chiles if you get homesick. If you end up in Oro Valley they will roast them at the Oro Valley Farmers Market every Sat while in season.

While eegee's may not have the Baggins-style menu, the value and quality was always excellent. And nothing beats an eegee's slush when it's 100+ outside.

It's always surprising how mediocre national chains succeed... when On The Border opened in Tucson in 1999 or 2000 to one-hour waits for a table one had to ask "why?" with Mi Nidito, Guillermo's, Rosa's, El Minuto, I don't have enough time to list them all, etc. I guess it's the sameness whether it's in Minneapolis or Marana (no offense to anyone of either place) that's comforting.

You are exactly right! In Mpls, we have Davanni's. The assorted hoagie there, has been what I judge all other hoagies against. I went as far as posting questions on line to find out how they are made. I think an Eegees deluxe grinder without their house sauce, taken home, deconstructed, toasting the bun with garlic butter and then using a lite spread of mayo, just may do it. lol A lot of work, you say? When I lived in Sinaloa, I learned to replicate things like Bisquick, Taco Bell seasoning, Miracle Whip, Lipton Dry Onion Soup Mix, Pace Picante and all kinds of things not available there. American ingenuity! I still have most of the recipes. (not sure why!)

Beyond Bread is a great local sandwich joint and bakery.

Had lunch at Poco & Moms today. Hole in the wall pretty well sums it up but in a good kind of way.. Friendly staff, lots of regulars in there they knew by name etc. They serve the breakfast, lunch and dinner menu anytime of day. The chile relleno was good, lightly battered. Some places the batter is so thick it overwhelms the chile. But what makes the meal is the green chile sauce that I topped it off with. I downed two full glassses of water with my meal but it was worth it! They have three sauces, the mild which is the green chile sour cream blend, the medium, which is the traditional New Mexico red sauce and the hot which is a Hatch green chile sauce. Only wish it was closer to where I live. Would love to try an omelet with the green chile sauce. They also sell the green chile sauce by the jar to take home with you. If I lived closer I would be in there at least once a week for something.

No one has mentioned Zona 78? We went there for my birthday and it quickly became my favorite restaurant in Tucson. Fantastic coal-fired pizza, homemade pasta, fresh mozzarella ... I think I need to go back for lunch today.

For sandwiches, there's a new place on Grant & Swan called Caffe Nation Bistro - they have a location on the east side as well, but I'm not sure where - it's delicious. Beats the pants of Jimmy John's. Beyond Bread is good, and so is Bison Witches on 4th.

But seriously, Zona 78. Best place ever.
