She is a fictional character, but her marriage is a sham. He could be in the house and distracted with his mistress (calling her incessantly) or he could just be gone. If I were in her place (and having been in a very dysfunctional, abusive marriage myself where my mate was often very distracted) I would rather him gone, too.
Having someone "provide" is not the be-all end-all. There is such a thing as being emotionally available.
Sometimes I wonder at the backlash! Wow. She is certainly not the most deplorable female character on the show but she evokes really strong responses. I wonder why.
You are looking at her with the eyes of the present, not through the eyes of the time. She would get NO support from him unless he wished to give it to her. There were very few professions available to women of the day, and a lot of competition for the few there were, especially for women who were untrained.
Many women of the day had emotionally unavailable men. It was not manly to show feelings or interest in things that required sensitivity. These were the days of pre Gary Cooper and John Wayne. Strong and not very talkative.
Educated people of a higher class might have been different, but she's common.
Right Golden!
Also Nucky is so good to her children, he seems to really love them and that alone is a very good reason to work things out and show him respect. Not Margaret though, just take, take and more take.
"Nucky is good to the children" Yes, and he is also a murderer, corrupt and a gangster who puts their life in danger, but Margaret has the audacity to be polite, in keeping with the time, compassionate and have an affair which countless people do, the swine!
I am a fan, think shes playing a 1920s Irish female great. And shes hot lol.

I think Margaret should have been educated, but was born in the wrong time. She wants to make a name for herself, with the church, with the hospital and the women she's trying to educate. I think a lot of her motivation is not just innate goodness. She is driven by her own ego. She tried to bribe God into healing her child by donating money.
She's using Nucky's money to do it, the only means of income to her. She can never achieve respect and power on her own. I am convoluted in my attitude, feeling pity that she was not born in another time, and still not respecting her for what she is doing to Nucky. Many marriages have had affairs, on both sides, and still weathered through it.
Margaret is darned lucky that Nucky's actress girlfriend is not set on marriage. That woman is not right for Nucky, but at a certain point in the relationship she might be able to talk him into a great mistake. On the other hand, some men like women who they can never have. I don't think Nuck is that type, though.
She sure does love spending that murderer's money and if she is so worried about the kids being in danger, why is she still there? I sure wouldn't be.
We have the luxury of knowing what Nucky is really like, she doesn't. I like having normal, if flawed, characters in amongst all these crazy criminals, it gives it a veneer of normality and realism i feel.
Way to go, Gyp. he was supposed to kill all of them, and he's 0-3. They all lived LOL.
Gyp is a dead man
What? Nucky's girlfriend died, didn't she?
When he gave her that annuity, I was hoping they were calling it quits.
