from what i understand, the original song is something like a guy in a nightclub telling a girl he's the best choice to take home, pointing a finger to himself as "this", while continuously pointing out "inferior men" as "that"
you can pick me, or pick a loser like that (finger points to another guy)
oops. i just briefly read through the thread and saw post #6. lol my interpretation was way off for years
I just do not understand the connection between Rats, Korean Cars, Hip-hop-rap music and why they keep showing this stupid commercial every five minutes.
Is this car big in the Hip-Hop community??? Or maybe it is a big seller with people who breed rats (gerbils?)???? Maybe Rat loving drug dealers buy this car a lot????
So, if you are knowledgeable in the area of any of these points I touched on, please let me know what is the deal, I am being tortured by this commercial.
First, they're not rats, they're hamsters. The commercial is a continuation of an advertising theme/campaign started by Kia in a previous ad. Said previous ad (linked below) differentiates the Kia Soul from everything else on the road by depicting other commuters as hamsters on hamster wheels while the "Kia hamsters" roll by in their Soul listening to hip-hop music, the implication being the Soul is über-cool compared to the routine "appliance" car driven by everyone else.
The second commercial, the one you refer to, is a naked appeal to the Kia Soul's target demographic, namely urban and wannabe-urban youth. The song is not unique to the commercial, it's a reworking of a classic early 1990s hip-hop track called "The Choice is Yours" by Black Sheep, chosen for obvious thematic reasons ("be a 'black sheep' and stand out from the crowd by driving a Soul").
This blog post deconstructs the ad and its appeal quite thoroughly.
I am not a fan of hip hop, nor am I in the target demographic. But, I LOVE this commercial. I think it is catchy, clever, and captures everything that KIA set out to do to market the Soul. Heck, I'd certainly go look at one if I was ready to make a move.
jeez, so much animosity for such a cute, clever commercial! I personally loved it, esp. since I used to have hamsters (folks, they're HAMSTERS, not rats!!). definitely makes me interested in the car (it is geared towards a younger generation that is far more likely to listen to and enjoy hip hop). I guess if you dislike the commericial that much, they obviously not targeting you. I'm not a fan of truck, Go Daddy, Pepsi Max, and old school cig commercials, but they aren't targeting me, so who cares!?!
I will say however, despite the fact I will never buy Old Spice, I LOVE those commercials. some do have cross-demo appeal
I think the commercials are entertainig and clever, and I don't like hip-hop as a rule. No, I suppose when seen through the cold light of reason they don't make sense, but I still enjoy them.

I agree -- on all counts.
And just today brought home my brand new Kia Soul!
ETA: I didn't choose the car because of the ads. In fact, I didn't even remember that the hamster ads were for the Soul until after I'd already test-driven the car and then happened to see this thread. (LOL)
