Ok - we all know, "It's just TV!"
But a lot of writers expect us to suspend disbelief, especially in dramatic shows.
We expect stupid things to happen in comedy - that's often the point.... So,
What makes you go, "Huh???"
For me it's the way the cop shows give NO ONE their Miranda rights, suspects are always being questioned alone in a room by two or three cops, and if the suspect asks for a lawyer the cops mutter to each other immediately that the case is now solved - after all what innocent person wants a lawyer?? I'd accuse the writers of a conspiracy to brainwash all of us, but I just don't think they're that smart. Oh, and when the show is running out of time, the suspect all of a sudden shrugs his/her shoulders and says, "OK. I did it. I killed all those people and hid their bodies on the moon!" or whatever. Yeah, that happens.
I agree! Plus some people get so addicted to them to the point that they can't think about much else. That's sick! I hate it when I'm talking to someone and they want to talk about reality shows or reality show "stars" or celebrities in general.
But back to scripts, I also notice the cop shows don't always pay attention to the laws and rules that real cops are supposed to follow. I guess it makes it more exciting...or they think so, anyway. I don't think real cops have high-speed car chases very often either.
Hey, every body has got to learn somewhere and it's on a lot of these shows that new writers get to learn how and/or what to write.
As far as suspending disbelief, I'll do that for Justified, Grimm, and something of quality artsy fartsy. Otherwise I just watch news or sports... if it's live.
