I almost didn't tune in because the previews looked a little sappy with the father daughter thing. But Jimmy Smits is in it and there was nothing else on, so I watched the pilot.
Come to find out, those sappy moments are few and far between and there is a lot of rife between the two characters. Smits character, Elijah, is a good man in most ways but a pretty big azz in others which keeps it interesting.
Elijah and Sydney are estranged at the beginning of the show because
Spoiler
Elijah cheated on his wife, Sydney's mother, with her mom's friends. The mom dies and Elijah convinces Sydney to come home and practice in his firm. They win a suit against a big ag company and it looks like they've mended fences.
So they're sitting at Elijah's home talking and in walks a young man who works at the firm. He calls Elijah "Dad" and Sydney says What did he just call you? In the last scene she's talking to a friend and says my Dad and I aren't speaking.
Sydney finding out about Elijah's flaws could keep it interesting for a while. I'll keep watching.

I enjoyed it as well. Although I am probably a bit biased, since I spent half my life in Memphis... I am just glad they are actually trying to show a little bit of the character of Memphis, showing them at Rum Boogie, The Four Way, some of the street art, and the office downtown. I'll definitely keep watching to see where they take it.
I watched most of it to see Jimmy Smits and also to see Memphis Landmarks. However, I just couldn't get through it to the end. It wasn't worth it to sit through the commercials to see what happens. It was too formulaic for me. The usual lawyer devoting all their time to one big case (not realistic) and the lead actress to me was a snooze. Another ordinary, competent pretty face with nothing special to offer, typical American TV casting. It was the pilot so I will try to give it another shot, but it's not a show, so far, that I will go out of my way to watch. The courtroom scenes were the usual unrealistic way that depicts the way the law works, but if it were realistic, the audience would be bored to tears. Like many of this genre, the writers can't get away from the Perry Mason formula.
Yep. Filmed on location in Memphis. I have been to both Rum Boogie (down on Beale Street) and The Four Way (Bad, run down part of the city, but really good soul food near the Stax Museum). It's cool seeing Memphis get some prime time attention.
I struggled with it a bit and found it slow moving. I'll see how the next episode goes
