Well, the show is on and looks to be the Canadian version of the Bible. Or at least, Abraham sounded like he had a Canadian accent. Then all of a sudden, Moses shows up in the body of Frank Gallagher. Well, Moses after he was on the run.

The show has some nice touches and doesn't strike me at all like a made up fairy tale, or whatever those earlier complaints were. That's probably the Canadian coming through.

I'm impressed so far. I had actually started a thread on this in the religion for anyone who wants to debate the merits of the History Channel broadcasting this mini-series (I won't be paying that thread any attention since I'm not interested in going there).

I thought it was pretty good. I learned everyone back then had really great white teeth too!

I got called away just as Pharaoh's army had the Hebrews trapped in front of the Red Sea, missed the ending.

How did it come out?

I'm not impressed. I'll probably give it another shot next week...but this first episode was a bit of a hash.

I actually laughed out loud at the part where Moses had just led them through the Red Sea. It showed a Hebrew screaming "Freeeeeeeeeeedom!!!!!!!" in an eerily Mel Gibson sort of way. I also found the Asian Samurai angel somewhat interesting. I don't recall that in the Bible.

This is better than thinking Cleopatra looked like Elizabeth Taylor.

Great walls of water, just like in the Charlton Heston version. And for some reason, the ground was dry.

Then freeeeeeeeeeeedom ! ! !

As for the show's merits as art...

I did like the fact that they cast someone as Moses who didn't look like a California surfer boy movie star.

Other than that, they went with a very weak, straight forward script reducing the characters to cartoon depth, Pharaoh came across as the villain in a cheapo '60's spy flick, all impotent rage and bluster. They also chose to place an emphasis on scenes where they could utilize their computer generated special effects, and milking those scenes at the expense of the story. They jumped straight from the safe passage across the Red Sea to Moses coming down the mountain with the commandments.

The Cecil B DeMille film of "The Ten Commandments" was also on the air last night and I can't imagine who would want to watch the low budget and dull History Channel version of the story as opposed to the big budget movie which is immensely more entertaining.
