There have been successful spinoffs before - Frasier was a spin off from Cheers and was very successful for a number of years.

The CSI spinoffs have done well, by & large.

Laverne & Shirley lasted for years as a Happy Days spinoff, and The Jeffersons from All in the Famiy.

There are a lot of bombs out there (Joanie loves Chachi as another Happy Days spinoff...), but it's certainly not set in stone.

I'm so thrilled I'm ready for a nap already. I would have much rather seen stories set 10 or 20 or 30 years in the future, where society has had to reorganize itself in response to the undead. Or at the very least an interesting location, one we haven't seen 40,000 times on TV for the past 50 years.
Most of the current show is set in the rural forest areas around Atlanta - other than season 1, Atlanta has barely even registered on the show's radar until the last few "Grady" episodes.

The LA metro area is a lot more densely populated (18 million CSA vs 6 million) than Atlanta and offers the potential of mountain, desert and the ocean locations vs mostly small towns and rural areas around Atlanta. You do get the tail end of the Appalachian Mountains north of Atlanta, but the group has stayed mostly south of the city by most accounts, but you're a long ways from the ocean or from any sort of desert.

I agree, but this isn't a spin-off per se - even though there is little hope of the general public not calling it that. This is like what Star Trek: Voyager or Deep Space 9 is to The Next Generation.

I've read articles where it was termed as a "companion" series.
