The walkers would be bones by now and not really that threatening unless with a massive horde. The elements would also hurt them (hot, humid summer, ice, snow, blizzards, rain, etc).
The original walkers are disintegrating but new walkers get created via new deaths from human interactions. I think if we're to suspend disbelief about the existence of walkers we can also be asked to suspend disbelief about their longevity.
I think the Dwight-Eugene situation gets resolved tonight one way or another. Possibly Negan heard the tape of their conversation about Dwight's treachery and Eugene not ratting him out.
The Walking Dead is still a ratings success even with the current troubles. That said: the creative team really needs to take a step back after this season & work on fixing the issues that this show is suffering from.
There are so many good writers working in television today. How has modern TV given us 'Game of Thrones,' 'Breaking Bad,' 'Orange is the New Black,' etc, and 'The Walking Dead' cannot or will not hire a good one?
Hopefully Season 9 will feature the comic book's time skip and address the many logistical/realism complaints such as no more gasoline for vehicular travel.

Even that scenario presumes an absence of attrition.
He is beginning to irritate me. They should have gotten rid of him instead of Abraham. I like Abe's snarks, wit, bravery. Eugene is just a waste of air.
Playing up Eugene's (or someone's) inventiveness and problem-solving ability could resolve a lot of issues like diminishing fuel supplies and lack of textile manufacturing and add a whole new dimension to the show.
