If the storyline is set 10 years later than the year the series ended, a movie could be GREAT. Or even later in time.
Deadwood continued to be a rough and interesting place for many decades after it was founded. There are plenty of stories to tell that still include Swearingen, Bullock, and etc.
I'd love for the movie to end with Swearingen's death in 1904. There is some speculation about whether or not he was shot by someone (a "hit") or squashed by a train while drunk. I've actually seen the original funeral home record and it definitely says cause of death is "RR Accident". But for the movie, can't you just see a cool noir ending . . . Swearingen running in a train yard (it was actually in Denver), being chased by someone with a gun, running straight into the path of a moving train . . . kaPOW (train whistle blows and brakes shriek)!
I found the funeral home record still on my computer. Here it is for your enjoyment! He's line #176. You may have to click on it to see the whole thing.
I think you are thinking of Powers Booth, the actor who played Cy..... Al's competition in the saloon and hooker bidness
I believe Ian McShane (Swearingen) is still very much alive.....
You're right, that's great news! I thought I saw on the news of his passing and was sad to hear that, now I see he is still alive. That's great, so glad I was wrong.

Well, it's not that great for Powers Boothe.. And, honestly, I missed, or had forgotten that he had passed away.
Jeffrey Jones has basically stopped acting.. Though not sure how much of it was of his own volition.. The start of his problems predated Deadwood, but they continued on past it.. Not certain if he's too toxic to bring back.
Timothy Omundson had a stroke, but his character was already killed off.
Ralph Richeson played the cook at the Grand Central.. I honestly don't remember the character at all.. he passed in 2015.
Outside of that.. I think everyone is still alive and well from the cast. Though, of course, 15 years older.
I loved the series and hope the movie will be as good
