Actors under the age of 18 can only work a set number of hours a day and have to have time off for schooling. Producers don't want to mess with that, so they cast 19-20+ year olds.

This.
Also, older actors who have gone through HS will have a better grasp of the character because they have already moved through that stage in their life.
I dont think it matters. All the characters in FNL could pass for high schoolers.

I agree w/the first point based on my own personal experience. Not so sure though that they all could pass off as high schoolers.
They look too mature. A high school frosh is a HS frosh. Same with college.
The thing is, 90210 (the original) did this and it felt plastic (even lampooned on the Simpsons). The only one that seemed to acknowledge this substitution was 21 Jump Street...
The added thing is as was mentioned here, stories outlasting their actual real-world lifetime. It is easier with some, like the Simpsons or MASH, but with ones involving school, you KNOW that they can only last 4 years otherwise it feels stretched. (AfterMASH anyone?)
I like it when a show grows with its characters, although some growth is debatable (Scrubs?). Letting the main actors play older roles as they grow up fits (Everyone Hates Chris). Trying to stay in that demographic/plot run is lame as well (Cosby Show).
Relating to comics, that is one reason for respect for ones like "For Better or Worse" and "Doonesbury". The characters get OLDER, have kids, get married and some die (not in that order). But with others, they stay the same age for decades (Foxtrot, I love ya, but come ON!!! Let Paige and....The older bro go to College already!!! )
OK, a little OT, but so long as we were talking about , you know, SHOWS and stuff....you know....like, ya.
I think NBC is actually pretty good about keeping shows around. FOX is absolutely horrible though. I almost refuse to get wrapped up in a FOX show because I know it's chances for making a complete run are pretty much zip.
What, Fox won't accept any sponsorships from corporate interests?
