I was reading about ABT Benefits on the NJ DOL website, but I just had a few questions regarding it.

1.) How do you qualify for it and when do you apply for them?

2.) Is there any reason why you could get rejected?

3.) How does ABT Benefits work? Do they just pay for your schooling or do they pay you at your weekly unemployment pay and pay for your school?

4.) Do you have to apply for a class/school before you see a One Stop Career Counselor or after?

5.) What are TRA Benefits and who are eligible for them? Is that for job training or something else completely different?

I am just curious because I did not know that they had job training and I am interested in checking into it.

I didn't use ABT -- I rcvd a grant for tuition under WIA. But I assume that the initial steps would be similar - an individual appointment with a councilor at a One Stop center [as opposed to the Unemployment office]. But I have learned that even within NJ, different One Stop Career Centers work slightly differently. Some have you make an appointment for a group orientation meeting which explains the different programs, then you wait for an appointment with a councilor.

The process for me was that group meeting, then deciding which way to go. Then filling out an application: researching fields in demand; picking courses & explaining how they would help me get a job, applying for & getting rejected for a Pell Grant. The councilor needs to approve what you want to do, and the county has to have the funds. The one I went to was very helpful [aside from the usual red tape]. They explained the benefits & down-sides to the different programs and went out of their way to approve & speed up the process for me. They ran up against the end of fiscal year shortage of funds [June] but got me in as soon as the process opened up again.

As I said, I used WIA - they paid for courses & I still got UE benefits, and was not cut off when training ended [like 1 of the programs does if you don't find a job within a certain number of weeks after completion - can't remember which one though].

You have nothing to loose by giving it a shot !
