Hello!

My husband has been out of work since 10/3/11, with no luck in finding a job... Yesterday, unemployment told him that he will be paid for another 17 weeks- bringing us to early August and a total of around 76 weeks paid. Will he have other benefits once the initial payments are done? Thanks so much!

OP, Contact your states social services dept. If he would have other benefits, ui would have nothing to do with it.

Seventeen weeks from now takes you to August 4.

October 3, 2011 - August 4, 2012 is 43 weeks - not 73 weeks.

So, I assume this claim began earlier than 10/11 and that he has worked off and on.

Whether or not there are benefits after August 4 depends on his claim history.

Is this his only claim or, because of his part-time work, did he have a second (or third) claim. If so, what are the dates of those claims?

Please provide exact information on his claims history and benefits paid.

If he has had only one claim, then his benefits end in August - but, as I said, that is 43 weeks from October 3 - not 73.

Expanded benefits vary by state with the official state unemployment figure. Massachusetts' figure went down in the past year and I believe some extended benefits ended.

Hello! Thank you for your replies. I am sorry I made an error with the weeks - I was told he would be able to collect unemployment for up to 76 weeks, but now they are saying just until August 4th as was pointed out. His first claim was the week after his lay off on 10/3/11.

He was an estimator for HVAC and plumbing and this is his third lay off in four years. The sad part is that he was always an employee in good standing and when he was let go it was always with a whole slew of other employees at the same time. In fact, he was re-hired after a lay off at one company after their financial situation improved. We have two little kids so it is so stressful! He is very willing to work but has not been able to find anything and he only has an Associate's Degree and not a B.A., but he does have 5+ years experience estimating. I am just so unclear on what this means for us if he can't find something by August 4th. At least I carry the healthcare benefits through my job, so we are safe on that front. Thanks for your help!

Actually, that information is a worst-case scenario. If MA's 3-month average unemployment rate remains at 6%, your husband should also be able to collect another 14 weeks of Tier II.

Massachusetts is currently paying:

26 wks - state benefits
20 wks - EUC Tier I
14 wks - EUC Tier II
13 wks - EUC Tier III (will trigger off in June)

Your husband currently is collecting and has 17 more weeks on Tier I, but ...........

MA probably will also still be paying Tier II (needs 3-mo. average UE rate of 6%) after August 4th, as it is unlikely MA 3-month average UE rate will fall below the new 6% trigger (after 6/1) for Tier II by August 4 . The monthly UE rate may be below that, but the 3-month average - probably not.

Therefore, with any luck at all, your husband should transition to Tier II on August 4th for another 14 weeks. In that event, his benefits will end November 10th.

Good luck.
